‘Rural students & Communication skills’ are they really connected?
I
joined education industry switching from banking & sales way back in 2010.
I observed one thing here while delivering my first lecture in the class of BBA
somewhere during July 2010. When I started teaching in English there was a kind
of discomfort among all students in the class. After the class few students met
me personally to inform that it was very strange for them to have English as a
teaching language. To their strange reactions I was more surprised. As I
studied in University of Pune in a very reputed institution ‘Ness Wadia
College’; I never imagined that there could be another language to use while
teaching as a professor in class. But very soon I came to know the real problem
of so called Rural India in terms of lacking good communication skills
especially in English language. It is very unfortunate to relate the tribal
area as the reason for weakness in communication skills especially in English.
I do not see any connection when I am told that rural students are not good in
language skills.
Let me prove my point, this area has English medium schools too. If I
decide to track journey of students between these two different learning
environments, I can do it easily. I have specifically observed the students who
were coached well by the experts in English language who have a very good
command over their English today. Students who were not fortunate to get
skilled English teachers like these are still facing problems in English
communication.
It is easy to blame the rural or tribal areas but think logically, what
is its role in shaping someone’s language skills? If you receive right coaching
combined with your desire to learn, you turn up into the best students no
matter what environment you have around you. Here I am not blaming any person
but facts cannot be changed either. As it’s over a decade I am teaching in
rural side, even students find it easy to blame their poor communication skills
habits on their school teachers. If we stop this blame game & work on
solutions I do not think the day is far away when there will be no fear of
communication skills among rural students also.
To conclude I can comment that major focus is to be given to the
teaching side even in the remotest part. As a skilled manpower is a must in
every sector, educationists must appoint quality teachers who can impart all
the language & communication skills along with the life coaching skills in
every student they teach. Only then we can prove how unethical it is to blame
only students (in rural area) for their poor communication skills. Do you agree
with me?
